There are still a large number of people who aren't quite convinced that they stand to benefit from massage. For those of you still sitting on the fence, here is some information on the benefits of massage and some tips on getting the most out of your massage session.
What can massage do for you? Massage has been proven in clinical studies to positively impact your immune and circulatory systems. It also greatly reduces the effects of stress which is known to cause 80% of all diseases. Anyone with chronic pain or musculoskeletal problems will benefit from a massage session. A massage is also great after those hard workouts and can decrease post-workout muscle soreness.
Your massage should be about you! To get the most out of your massage;
1.Bring your favorite relaxation CD to listen to during your session.
2.Sensitive skin? Bring a lotion you know is OK for your skin.
3.Bruises? Sore spots? No touch zones? Be sure to tell your therapist what areas to avoid.
4.Communicate your needs clearly to the massage therapist. Is the pressure too heavy? Do you feel pain? If you feel like you are about to cringe speak up and let your therapist know!
5.Plan to take it easy the day you get your massage. To experience the full benefits of your session be sure to set aside some time to relax. You might feel pleasantly drowsy after your massage and making the time for a nap is a good idea.
6.Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine after your massage.
What if you didn't like your massage? Be aware that every massage therapist has a different approach to massage and their style may not be a match for your needs. Don't be afraid to try a few different therapists until you find someone you like.
Lastly, there are instances, unfortunately, where massage is not indicated. If you are actively ill with a cold, flu, or any other infection you should reschedule your appointment for a day when you are feeling better. Excess alcohol intake the 24 hours before your massage is also not recommended. Anyone with uncontrolled blood pressure, a history of blood clots or other circulatory conditions, someone who has had recent surgery, who is pregnant, or any chronic health condition should consult with their doctor before getting a massage. If you call your doctor they will usually let you know over the phone if they have any concerns about massage.
